Assignment:
You will receive four prompt options. Select the one that best caters to your intellectual interests and curiosities. Before developing a thesis, engage in research that broadens your understanding of the topic and introduces you to the intellectual discourse that scholars and literary critics have already been having about your primary source text.
Then, join the intellectual conversation by developing your own thesis, and incorporating both the primary source text as well as the articles and published essays as other sources of evidence.
Your four prompt options are:
1.For hundreds of years, people have been moving to The United States from all over the world in pursuit of the picture-perfect America that is glorified as the “land of the free. ”The “American Dream” is a phrase used to capture the utopic idea of the capability, by working hard, of anyone in America to rise up from any economic class to a higher one, in which he or she establishes a happy, successful life, usually with a family. This idea is certainly a dream of many, if not most Americans. However, this desire is not necessarily one that can be fulfilled by anyone. Consider how the American Dream is defined in your primary source text. Is The American Dream Attainable; and if so, for whom? (Of Mice and Men, A Raisin in the Sun)
2. It has been said that education will make you free. But in literature and life, we see contrasting points of view about the role of education, what being educated looks like, and who should be educated. Many would argue that formal education is meant to benefit both the individual and society but in looking at the texts we have read this year, we are forced to wonder….Is Education a Human Right or a Privilege? (Douglass, Black Boy)
3.In order to survive, people have been known to go to great lengths and to do things they
would not ordinarily do. Why is it that some people are able to survive terrible ordeals,
while others do not? Are there qualities that a “survivor” might possess which make them more likely to be successful when placed in a difficult position? Careful study of the literature begs the question...What Does It Take To Be A Survivor? (Night, Douglass, Of Mice and Men, the Odyssey, Black Boy)
4.It’s easy to think of people who are strong in body. Many famous athletes have tremendous physical strength. But some people are extremely strong in mind and spirit as well. Do large muscles and courage make someone strong, or intelligence and wisdom? Are there other traits and characteristics that should be used to determine one’s strength? Careful consideration of the texts that we have read and discussed this year leads one to wonder… Is Strength More than Just Muscle? (Odyssey, Night, Of Mice and Men)
